The best hotel in Mexico is just two hours away on the Baja California peninsula
For a decade the exclusive resort experience at the tip of the Baja peninsula was well-removed from the famous bars and clubs of downtown Cabo San Lucas that many recall fondly (if vaguely) from their college days. Esperanza, One&Only Palmilla and Las Ventanas al Paraiso were the luxury leaders in the destination. They and the rest of the most exclusive hotel properties, golf resorts and residence clubs were on the Corridor, the 20-mile stretch between the two Los Cabos towns of Cabos San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo.
But that changed when The Resort at Pedregal debuted in 2009 and immediately bumped the short list of the best resorts in the region from three properties to four. Now, the resort is not only among the best in Los Cabos, it’s been named the best resort hotel in Mexico in the 2017 Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards.
It’s the second time the AAA Five-Diamond; Forbes Five-Star resort has been named the best in its country. The first was after a 2014 post-Hurricane Odile remodel added additional rooms and amenities. In addition to achieving the No. 1 ranking among Mexican resorts on the World’s Best list, The Resort at Pedregal was also voted as 28th of 100 Best Hotels in the World by Travel + Leisure readers.
Located on an extraordinary, 24-acre site at the southernmost tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, the cliffside resort is separated from bustling downtown Cabos San Lucas by a chandelier-lit tunnel through the mountain rock that opens on the dramatic and beautiful resort set on a beautiful Pacific Ocean beach. The tunnel’s tall iron gates close behind visitors. They check in at an open-air lobby with spectacular views of the famous Lands End and El Arco rock formations. Guests feel a world away from the city, and yet they’re close enough to walk over if they want a taste of the touristy town and its party attractions, and the much-improved foodie scene in and around the city is a short ride away.
The resort includes 113 rooms, beachfront suites, bi-level casitas and multi-bedroom villas, each with its own private plunge pool and personal concierge.
One could spend an entire visit and never venture back beyond the gates of the resort.
Spend hours at the Luna y Mar Spa enjoying treatments inspired by the lunar cycle; lounge by the pool; sip flights of bubbly paired with mole and sea salt at the cliff-side Champagne Terrace; and dine at Don Manuel’s, the resort’s signature restaurant that serves a contemporary take on classic Mexican cuisine prepared with local organic products.
But today’s traveler is all about authentic experiences, so when it’s time to grab that iconic Instagram image to earn one’s intrepid traveler stripes, allow the resort’s new Baja Luxploration options to lure you away from the beach and the spa.
There are six itineraries available to discover the real Baja far from the cruise excursions tourist tours: surf on a remote beach, snorkel with sea lions and swim along with magnificent whale sharks, or explore a desert oasis with waterfalls and a secret natural swimming pool made out of rock to swim in. All the adventures are guided, and feature insider access to naturalists, adventurers, farmers and artisans, who lend their know-how and personal narrative, adding substance and character to each experience. There’s also a chef-prepared picnic and other amenities that make roughing it for a morning a bit less…well, rough.
Back at the resort, don’t miss dinner at the stunning El Farallón restaurant, one of the best culinary experiences in Los Cabos. Dine on fresh lobster and catch-of-the-day fish, sold by the pound and flame-grilled, all served by the light of hundreds of lanterns and candles, with star-lit skies above and waves breaking mere feet away.
